Duties and responsibilities

The Department of Social Science (DSS) makes up one of the largest multidisciplinary social science research and teaching centres in London and produces world-leading research and reports.

This post is funded by the British Heart Foundation to research parents’ and children’s consent to heart surgery in two London hospitals. The post-holder will be supported to undertake the following activities: multi-disciplinary literature review; observing in wards, clinics and medical meetings; interviewing 40 families and 20 hospital staff; audio-recording interviews and also discussions between doctors and families; analysing qualitative data; writing reports; convening advisory group meetings; day-to-day management of this study; assisting the chief investigator to ensure effective delivery of the research programme.

This post is available from October 2018 and is funded for 18 months in the first instance. 

Key Requirements

The researcher will have a PhD in sociology or related discipline, and proven experience of conducting and reporting qualitative healthcare research. Knowledge of bioethics, children’s rights and critical realism will be an advantage.
